Hmmmm, not too long ago your garage door started making funny noises. It concerned you, but not too much. In any case, it still seems to be operating as it should when hitting the button on your remote.
The rational side of your brain suggests it may need to be looked at as it could get worse at the most inopportune time.
But how do you describe the noises over the phone? Boom, clunk, thump! Do you hear a loud thump or clunk when the door opens and closes? If you have an electric garage door opener, it is very possible that while lifting and lowering your garage door, the door is especially heavy and creates the noise. It could be that one of the torsions springs (installed over the door of your double door) is broken and needs to be replaced. By the way, it is extremely rare for both torsion springs on a 16-foot door to break at the same time If you have a single door, let’s say 9 feet wide and with a torsion spring, your door opener may be able to lift the door in an emergency, but this is not without risk. Look closely over the door when it is closed and see if one of the springs is broken in two pieces. If so, contact a garage door specialist without delay to have the broken spring changed out.
Clink, clink, clink! This is a mid-level noise but is produced continuously when the door opens and closes. There could be a variety of reasons but often times it comes from the coils of the springs rubbing against each other. As garage doors open and close, dirt and dust can gather in the springs and track and over time, when the springs are dry, this rubbing produces such a noise.
Another reason for this kind of noise could be when one or more of the rollers is defective or worn out and is ready to fall off.
Squeak, squeak, squeak! This is a sharper sound, and is heard constantly when the door open and closes. This could be due to lack of lubrication, parts of the door, over time, can dry out and stick together.
Grind, grind, grind! A more constant, metallic and medium-level noise is frequently related to the chain or belt of the electric garage door opener. It seems like the opener is forcing unnecessarily and that the gear pinions are skipping a link. The chain or belt may be too loose or perhaps the gear kit needs to be replaced. Some of these symptoms are more serious than others. A broken spring is serious and a professional needs to address it. On the other hand, noises from the rubbing of the bottom weatherstripping on the exterior frame weatherstripping are much less serious and often times a good garage door tune-up will resolve the problems.
